How We Set Materiality for Mid-Sized Trading Companies

A practical look at how engagement partners choose planning materiality when revenue is volatile and inventory turns quickly.

When a trading company books large seasonal shipments, a single percentage of revenue can overstate or understate planning materiality. We usually start with a blended base: profit before tax for a stable year, and a lower percentage of revenue when margins swing widely.

For clients in northern Honshu, we also watch inventory concentration. If three SKUs dominate the warehouse, we lower performance materiality on stock and related cost of sales, even when overall planning materiality looks generous.

Partners document the rationale in the planning memo so field staff know which balances get tighter sampling. Finance teams can help by sharing monthly margin packs early—those packs often reveal whether the prior-year base still fits.

Materiality is not a guess pinned to a textbook table. It is a judgement that must survive partner review and, if needed, a conversation with the audit committee about why certain thresholds moved year on year.
